“格林维尔”号核动力攻击潜艇属于美国海军“洛杉矶”级核潜艇，编号为ssn772，1996年2月开始服役。该艇标准排水量为6300吨，水下排水量为7147吨，艇长110.3米，吃水9.9米，水下航速32节，由1座s6g型核反应堆提供动力，功率高达35000马力。该艇人员编制133人(13名军官)，装备有26具武器发射管(艇后部装有12具垂直导弹发射管)，同时可装载8枚“战斧”导弹、4枚“鱼叉”导弹和14枚mk48反潜鱼雷。

2001年2月10日晨，正在夏威夷海区进行例行训练的美国海军“格林维尔”号核潜艇，在距瓦胡岛16公里的海面上与一艘日本拖网渔船“爱媛”号相撞。美军核潜艇仅留下轻微擦痕，日本渔船则迅速沉没，有9人下落不明。
