Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) is an organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Special Olympics Texas was founded in 1970 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of former President John F. Kennedy. The organization has grown from a handful of athletes to more than 50,000 in Texas alone. The organization is part of the larger Special Olympics movement, which serves over 4.2 million athletes in 170 countries worldwide.

The mission of Special Olympics Texas is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympics Texas also provides athletes with the opportunity to develop self-esteem, confidence and a sense of accomplishment, as well as to experience the rewards of success that come from participating in sports.

In addition to providing sports training and competition, Special Olympics Texas also provides support and education for athletes, families and volunteers. Special Olympics Texas offers a variety of programs and services, including health screenings, sports clinics, sports camps, family support groups, and educational seminars. Special Olympics Texas also provides assistance to local organizations in establishing and running Special Olympics programs.

Special Olympics Texas hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including regional, state and national competitions. The organization also hosts the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games, which is the largest Special Olympics event in the state. The Summer Games take place each year in June and feature athletes competing in various sports, including basketball, bowling, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Special Olympics Texas also provides year-round fundraising opportunities for individuals, businesses and organizations. Fundraising activities include the sale of Special Olympics merchandise, corporate sponsorships, and donations. The funds raised by Special Olympics Texas are used to support the organization’s mission, provide services and support to athletes, and help cover the costs of hosting competitions and events.
